Day 4 WLJ:Swimming with the sharks

IALT: Reflect on another trip

Day #4: Swimming with the Sharks
By the end of Day #3, you have seen a lot of the north island of New Zealand.  Hopefully you have enjoyed it and you’re excited for the next phase of your journey – the ferry trip across the Cook Strait from the bottom of the north island to the top of the south island. You will spend the next two days exploring the south island before you head back up to Auckland, via Wellington (the capital city of New Zealand).

Activity 1: When you arrive in the south island, Curious Kiwi rents a shuttle van and drives your group from Picton (the town where the ferry dropped you off) to a beautiful beach on the opposite side of the island. The beach area is called Golden Bay and, at one end of the bay, is a stunning area called Farewell Spit.

Farewell Spit has been in the news recently as a number of whales accidentally swam into the spit and became stuck on the beach. They were unable to swim back to the ocean because the water was too shallow. Many local people tried to save the ‘beached’ whales. Please follow this Farewell Spit link to learn more about what happened. On your blog, describe what the local people did to try and save the beached whales.
The local people got there cooking pots, water bottles, laundry baskets, chilly bins and towels to cover and pour water on the whales to survive and wait for the high tide so they can calmly swim back to sea

Activity 2: After a morning of learning about beached whales in Golden Bay, you and your group are driven to a nearby town, Nelson, to watch a special movie calledWhale rider.’ It is a famous movie about a young girl who was born and raised in New Zealand. Watch the following movie trailers for Whale Rider: Whale Rider trailer #1 and Whale Rider Trailer #2 and then write a summary of the movie on your blog. What is it about? Be sure to also give the movie a rating out of 5 based on the trailer [1 = bad movie, 2 = okay movie, 3 = pretty good, 4 = good movie, 5 = excellent movie].
C:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\Whale Rider movie poster.jpg

Summary: I found this movie so inspiring to kids because when I was watching the trailers there were twins (boy&girl) and the boy was going to be a leader but the brother died. But the girl wanted to become chief.

In a scale of 1 to 5, I would pick 5 excellent movie because I like movies that are based on true things.t
When ‘Whale Rider’ finishes, you and your tour group enjoy a delicious meal in downtown Nelson before heading back to your hotel. You need to go to bed early because you have to get up at 4:30 a.m. the next morning to travel back to Farewell Spit to see a group (pod) of Hector’s Dolphins. It is going to be an early morning!
Bonus Activity: Hector’s dolphins are a very special native animal found only in New Zealand. They are the smallest dolphin in the world measuring 1.5 meters long and they are quite rare. Sadly, many Hector’s dolphins are killed every year when they get caught in large fishing nets and can’t escape. Some people have argued that fishermen shouldn’t be allowed to fish in Farewell Spit in order to protect the dolphins living there. What do you think? On your blog, tell us whether you think that fishing in Farewell Spit should be banned (stopped).

My Opinion: My opinion on whether I think that fishing at Farewell Spit should be stopped is that I wanna visit that area and get to swim and get to see a Hector Dolphin if I can.

Bonus Activity: 10 points

What I enjoyed was getting to know that there is a movie called Whale Rider that was made in New Zealand and it was about a chief who was on a whale while traveling to Ngati Porou.

Day 3 WLJ: Wild Eyes

IALTR:eflect on my second activity blog post on Winter Learning Journey.

Today the title of this task was "Wild Eyes". In the first activity it was telling us about Curious Kiwi's Aunties and Uncles currently living in Otorohanga Kiwi House and Native Bird Park. Then it says that Curious Kiwi is our tour guide and he would take us to the bird park which is a five hour drive from Dargaville. When we enter and walk trough a bird house you learn about the work that is being done. Then we decide to help out by adopting an animal. The animal I chose was a Kereru bird and it is a native wood pigeon. According to Google Kereru's eat Fruit. Kereru's are only found in New Zealand and they normally live in forest's.

Then we got on the bus and headed towards Hawkes Bay. Hawkes Bay is a pretty place and that is were we are resting for the evening. Then when we get to Napier we walk through the Waitangi Regional Park and then notice that the leave on some trees are damaged because of non-native animals like a possum. A possum is from Australia. Kiwi's are working hard to try kill predators like these so when 2050 hits we will be free.

C:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\Possum pic.jpg

My Opinion.
My opinion on whether we agree on having predators in our country is that we should because we should allow other animals from other countries be welcomed into our country. 3 reasons why I think this way is because I've never seen a possum and I want to see 1 in New Zealand, I want to find out if there nice or not and I want to see 1 and feed it.

It is time for us to sleep, as soon as I close my eyes we hear something moving outside he hotel. When we looked outside it looked like a big bird(Moa).

What I enjoyed was looking outside and seeing a Moa. The challenges I found in taking a trip around the northisland of New Zealand is that we had to come back and sleep when it was night time, for me I wanted to stay up and take a tour around the North Island of New Zealand because it looked cool.

Day 2 WLJ : New Zealand

IALT: write about what I am doing for Day 2 on WLJ.

Day #2: New Zealand by Land and Sea
After a short ride through Auckland it is time to start exploring the rest of the country. Today you are going to venture around the north island of New Zealand to look at active volcanoes, gorgeous beaches, windswept coastline and lush, green bush. As a group, you will start at Rangitoto, the largest volcano in New Zealand before driving west to Karekare, a stunning beach on the outskirts of Auckland. You will finish the day by driving north to visit Tane Mahuta, the oldest living kauri tree in New Zealand.
C:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\Rangitoto island pic.jpgC:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\Karekare beach.jpgC:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\Tane Mahuta.jpg

Activity 1: After a very busy day of sightseeing you and your group drive from Tane Mahuta to your hotel in Dargaville. When you arrive you decide to sit down and record your thoughts in your travel diary.

C:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\NZ Map - Schematic.png

Before you start writing, take a minute to read more about Rangitoto island, Karekare beach and Tane Mahuta.  On your blog, tell us which of the three places you most enjoyed visiting and why.
(A). While I was visiting the 3 places Rangitoto Island, Karekare Beach and the Tane Mahuta tree walk 1 adventurous visit was my best and that was the Karekare beach walk because I've never been there and it was a good time to experience what I haven't experienced.

Activity 2: As an island nation, New Zealand is completely surrounded by water. It is the perfect place for people who like to swim or to sail! While in Dargaville, recovering from your busy day of sightseeing, you notice a number sailboats going by. One of the boats is manned by a young German girl named Laura Dekker. At the age of fourteen she sailed around the world the entire world by herself. You can watch a short video clip about her adventures here: Laura Dekker sailing trip.
Let’s imagine that you had the chance to interview Laura while in Dargaville. On your blog post five questions that you would ask her.
  1. Why did you want to become a Sailor?
  2. Who are you inspired by?
  3. Why did you sail past New Zealand?
  4. What was your favorite country/city you been to and why?
  5. How long did it take you to sail around the whole world.
There are my questions for Laura if I got to interview her in real life.

Bonus Activity: When you finish your interview with Laura, you decide to keep on interviewing people. For this activity, your task is to conduct a real interview with an actual member of your family. Please ask them to think about their five (5) favourite things to do in the out-of-doors. They can be things that they enjoy doing on land or in the water. Post the list of outdoor activities on your blog.
Today this activity was to interview 1 family member of my family and I chose my brother. The brother I chose was Saia and hes a a student that currently attends Auckland University. The 5 questions I prepared to ask him was,
  • What is your favorite sport?:-: His favorite sport is Netball
  • Why is netball your favorite sport?:-: I'm not sure I just really like playing the sport
  • What position do you play in netball?:-: Goal Shoot,Goal Attack and more
  • Do you have any up coming netball games? and Where?:-: My next game is in Tonga and I am playing for Tonga
  • What netball team are you in?:-: The Tongan team.

Bonus Activity: 10 points

After this we had to go back to sleep for our next trip for tomorrow.

What I found challenging was asking my brother the questions because he was very busy and I couldn't really ask him. What I enjoyed was getting to know that a 16 year old sailed the whole world by herself. What m next step is to try think outside of the box for questions.

Day 1 Of Winter Learning Journey Activities

IALT:Reflect on my first activities blog post on Winter Learning Journey.

Just before this blog post is being written I have finished my first activity. This is the activity instructions that I followed.

100% PURE New Zealand

Activity 1:  Go to the Tourism New Zealand website and click on the ‘Facts - New Zealand People’ tab. Read about the people of New Zealand and then choose three interesting facts to post on your blog. The facts must be written in your own words. Do not simply copy and paste the facts from the website☺.

I was exited to do this task because it is my first blogpost done on Winter Learning Journey. So here is the facts I have done in my own words.

(T1)New Zealand's friendly and down-to-earth people will be one of the things you treasure most about your visit.
  • There are 4 main Nationalities in this country and they are Maori,European,Pacific Islander(Me) and Asians. Today there are 4.4 million people in New Zealand. 67% European Descent, 14.6 Indigenous Maori, 9.2% Asians and 6.9% Pacific Islander. The main cities in New Zealand is Christchurch,Wellington and the city I currently live in Auckland.

(T2) Kiwi's love the great Outdoors.

  • The most popular sport in New Zealand is Rugby. All Blacks is a Rugby team and they currently have the Rugby World Cup,Cup at the moment. In New Zealand some schools play rugby and people look up to rugby stars.

(T1)Mate ship on the sporting Field.
  • New Zealand is known for loving the outdoors. 15% of families own boats. Hiking,Camping,Fishing, Bush and Beach walks are cool activities in New Zealand. The most adventurous activities are Climbing up Mountains . Climbing Mountain is popular in New Zealand because 1 New Zealander (Sir Edmund Hillary) climbed up the tallest Mountain in the world and it is Mount Everest.

Activity 2: Your tour of New Zealand is going to start right here in Auckland. Watch the Tourist video for Auckland to learn about the awesome things that you can see and do in the city. Once you’ve finished, choose your favorite five activities from the video and list them on your blog.

In this activity as you can up there↑. It said that we had to watch a video and there are activities in it and name 5 activities you like to do in the video and that's what I did so keep reading.

  1. Going to Kelly Tarltons
  2. Walking on the Beach and making Sand Castels
  3. Going to the Meusem
  4. Going on the Ferry Boat
  5. visiting Rangitoto
So I just listed my 5 favorite thing to do in the video and this activity is finished so im on the Bonus Activity.

Here is the Bonus Activity - Bonus Activity: Now it’s time to start your tour! Curious Kiwi decides to start by taking you on a short tour through downtown Auckland. You stop at the Sky Tower, the tallest building in all of New Zealand. When you look up, you see a huge New Zealand flag on the top of the tower. This flag was created back in 1902. That makes the New Zealand flag 115 years old!

H:\Blogging Study\WLJ 2017\New Zealand flag.png

Last year, the Prime Minister of New Zealand suggested that we should replace the flag with a new, updated design. He invited everyone in New Zealand to come up with their own flag design and submit it.
For this activity, it is your turn to design a new flag. Use any drawing programme that you wish. I would recommend using the Google Drawings programme or the Flag Designer website. It allows you to create a flag in three easy steps. When you are done, take a screenshot of your flag and post it on your blog. Here is an example:
To earn full points you must describe the flag, in words, below the picture. Please tell us what is on the flag and what inspired your design.
Here is my finished flag. This Flag represents 4 things to me, and they are Favorite Color, Culture, Sports and being a Kiwi. My Favorite Color is Blue, I am a proud to be Tongan, I play sports in Auckland and that represents the Left hand side of the Fern, On the right hand side of the Fern it represents where I country I currently live in and that is New Zealand. Here is my Flag...⇩

Hope you like it. I really enjoined doing this task because this is my first time completing and joinging in the Winter Learning Journey. What I found challenging was typing the facts up because I wrote a lot. My next step is to try write less but smarter words for my facts.

Free Fun Day Reflection

WALT: change up the activities we do while being at Free Fun Monday.

Today at 12:50 we went to set up for Free Fun Monday. It was Zumba at first but was changed t Free Fun Monday because the projector couldn't work. For today's Free Fun Monday we had Musical Chairs. We played songs and lots of kids came. This was located in the TPS Hall BTW (By The Way). When we were playing musical chairs it went on for 15 minutes so we finished at 1:25. Then the kids went outside and played some games outside with Metui and Akanesi. They played games while Losana and I were inside taking a brake. When they came back inside we had 1 Zumba sesh(Session) and all the Student councils that took part of Free Fun Friday was up on stage doing Zumba until the bell rang. Then when the bell rang all the kids went to class and we had to pack everything away.

What challenges I found was playing Musical chairs because there was a lot of kids and there was only a little bit of chairs. My next steps are to put more chairs out for Musical chairs because there might be a lot of kids. What I enjoyed was the last part, Zumba because everyone participated.
